For those who missed the global custody roundtable!
Simon Walker, deputy head of global custody product management, BNP Paribas Securities Services, participated in a roundtable on "How can stakeholders work together to redefine asset servicing so that it is a viable model for all constituents?".
For those who missed the session, here's a quick snapshot of what he said in response to this question:
- A new way of doing business enabling both Securities Services and clients to share new information and put the overall relationship on a more robust and solid footing
- Being responsible for the "safe custody" of our clients' assets is at the core of what we do - making sure the assets we look after are safely held in custody and accessible to clients at all times
- Our geographic developments in Asia and the Middle-East are signs of where we want to be in the future, we are already seeing the benefits of these new locations and the comprehensive range of services we can offer

Discussions at the Fund Forum International this year centred around the impact of the crisis on the asset management community: how can we rebuild investor confidence in the industry? What products will attract investors back? Which business model will perform best?
Speakers from the academic world provided some thought-provoking insights into:
- the behaviour of investors during the crisis
- the outlook for the credit markets
- the response of central banks to the crisis, and
- the many "wicked problems" the world is facing.
Many participants as Florence Fontan, head of public affairs at BNP Paribas Securities Services, spoke about the current regulatory environment. Whilst UCITS IV was seen quite positively, the reverse is true of the recent draft directive on Alternative Investment Fund Managers. There was a general feeling that any regulatory changes needs serious consideration before implementation.
This year again, Fund Forum International proved it was a great place to pick up on industry trends and meet senior people in the European and Global Asset Management industry.

NeMa June 2009: did you miss it?

|
|
Once again, NeMa proved an excellent occasion to exchange ideas with our clients and counterparties around the industry. Pierre Jond, head of sales and relationship management for financial intermediaries was delighted to share the BNP Paribas Securities Services' views on today’s ever-changing trading, clearing and settlement landscape – is a pan-European CCP preferable to a pan-European CSD?
For those who missed the show, here’s a quick snapshot of what he had to say.
Fragmentation really is the name of the game. Continued and increasing complexity at all three levels – trading, clearing and settlement – is bringing new challenges to the industry, rather than simplifying the arena.
Target2-Securities will bring many elements of a pan-European CSD. But this focuses mainly on the settlement layer, whilst the asset servicing notary function will remain largely domestic.
Interoperability will have a profound impact on the clearing layer, with only a handful of CCPs remaining across Europe.
The critical element in all of this is systemic risk – it needs to be identified, well-contained and ring fenced!
